Freo

Fremantle

We finally made it to Freo. I think everyone we encountered made a suggestion to go here. Fremantle is a port city in Perth. There are many things to do from shopping, eating and viewing some historic sights and museums.

The Fremantle market reminded me of Granville Island’s market in Vancouver. Immediately walking in I was salivating, my palate was overwhelmed by all the aromas, vibrant colours of the fresh produce and food stands. All I wanted to do was eat!

Walking through Freo on a Sunday morning, we saw people sipping their coffees on cappuccino strip. People love their coffee here and it’s not like Tim Horton’s or Starbucks. Drip coffee is hard to find and an average coffee costs around $4. You can order the typical lattes, cappuccinos and espressos, then there is a flat white or short black and others. I discovered I like a short macchiato, just a shot of coffee with a spoonful of milk crema. Paul says he’s happy enough with the instant coffee.

Fremantle’s history started as a free colony for settlers in 1829 but then became penal colony by 1850. The Roundhouse, once known as the Fremantle Gaol/Jail opened in 1831 and was used until 1886.

There is also the Fremantle Prison which is now a historic site where they operate tours. It was originally constructed by convicts shipped from Britain for convicts and operated until 1991. I’ve enjoyed learning the history about the convicts in this area.

We walked through a shipwreck museum and along the beach. Our visit ended with lunch at one of the restaurants by the water. I enjoyed some famous fish and chips and a glass of wine. Until next time, Freo!

Visiting a market like Granville is such a treat! I would love that too, what a lovely day out. Interesting that the gaol was in use up until 1991. You also still have that beautiful weather too the heighten the experience.

Loving all of your blog updates and that you’re all having a great time!
