Road trip: Margaret River

Margaret River, known for its wineries, craft breweries and beaches, is a small town 3 1/2 hours south of Perth. So we packed our wee car and went on a road trip. We found the area similar to Niagara-on-the-lake with beautiful scenic drives and wineries galore.

Busselton Jetty

After driving for 2 hours our first stop was in Busselton. There we saw a beautiful beach with green and blue water. We walked on the Busselton Jetty which is the longest wooden jetty (pier) in the world. We walked 2km out to sea. There were lots of people swimming, boating, diving and fishing in the area.

Lots of water play activities. Check out that paddleboat with a slide.
How do you catch a squid?
We are a far way from home

Margaret River

A lot of the accommodation in the regions are vacation homes (cottages). There are also a lot of campsites available. We found a small studio apt on Airbnb for 1 night. We went to the Margaret River Chocolate factory, did some tastings at a few wineries and a craft beer brewery. This area is very kid-friendly. A lot of the wineries and breweries cater to kids by having playgrounds. The weather was slightly cooler than Perth by 10 degrees which made it very nice and for me cool enough to wear a sweater.

Mammoth Cave

There are many caves in the region and the highlight of our trip was Mammoth Cave. Inside the cave we saw stalactites and stalagmites and being an active cave, it continues to form. We walked through with ease following a path and listening to a audio tour on the headsets provided.

A bit spooky for Atticus but he kept going
hello?? we are waving from up high
Fossils. Mostly teeth, one is from an extinct kangaroo. Did you know prehistoric kangaroos had long arms to grab leaves from trees?

a lot of steps
On our way out, just 160 steps up those stairs.

The karri trees in the area are grand. They are one of the tallest trees in the world. It made our drive very picturesque.

We look forward to going back to this region and staying longer next time.

    Hi Theresa,
I have enjoyed reading your blog and seeing the pics. Looks like you are having a great time.
We celebrated Australian Day here at school to make Skye feel welcome. She brought in Vegemite for us to try…..think I will stick to peanut butter! I was showing one of the grade 3’s where Australia is on my world map in my classroom and the child said, “I miss Miss Lau.” I said, “I miss her too.”

Hi Diane..That is so sweet!! I love that you guys celebrated Australia Day! I’m not too sure about Vegemite either. 🙂 I start school on Monday, I’m a bit nervous and will be missing all the familiar faces. Take care!
